‘I love this group’; Bishop Kearney grads react after winning gold in overtime hockey victory

It’s the third time in history that the U.S. women have become Olympic champions in hockey, each time over arch-rival Canada. Regulation ended 1-1, but Team USA’s Megan Keller had the final say with a goal to steal the win.

Among the team members is Webster native Haley Winn, a defender. In addition, Caroline Harvey (defender) of New Hampshire, Laila Edwards (forward) of Ohio, Kirsten Simms (forward) of Michigan, and Ava McNaughton (goalie) of Pennsylvania all graduated from Bishop Kearney. Harvey spoke about her emotions after the game.

“Speechless, unreal. I mean, not a lot of words, but a lot of emotion and excitement and proud is an understatement for our group,” Harvey said.

Edwards said this was a full-circle moment. “It was unbelievable. This is the best group I’ve ever been part of, top talent on the ice, off the ice. I love this group to death,” she said.

Bishop Kearney has been a longtime powerhouse in girls’ hockey, attracting talent from across the world. Two members of the German Olympic team (Nina Christof and Jule Schiefer) and Czechia goalie Michaela Hesová also graduated from the school. Many hockey players at the school moved thousands of miles away from their homes to pursue their dreams and train with the best, said Cari Coen, director of girls hockey at Bishop Kearney. We spoke with Coen at a watch party on Thursday to cheer on Team USA.
