Anthony Edwards scores 42 as Timberwolves escape Warriors before Thunder clash

SAN FRANCISCO — This wasn’t supposed to be a meaningful test for these mysterious Minnesota Timberwolves.

Heck, this Friday night affair against an emaciated Golden State squad without Steph Curry (knee), Jimmy Butler (season-ending ACL tear) and Draymond Green (late scratch with back issues) didn’t even qualify as a pop quiz for this split-personality team that returned to its inconsistent ways of late. Jekyll or Hyde should have been able to do this deed — with ease.

Yet, there they were midway through the fourth quarter, with the lead that was once as large as 25 points down to eight, inviting danger into this week that was already dicey enough as it was. As if the one-sided losses to Orlando (119-92), the Lakers (120-106) and the Clippers (153-128) weren’t bad enough — this coming after an impressive stretch in which they’d won eight of nine games — this confounding choice to play with their food against the B-Team Warriors meant that Anthony Edwards would need to stay on the floor until the end.
