PGA Tour shares Collin Morikawa’s ‘worst thing in the world’ reaction to Players withdrawal

The Players Championship got an early start Thursday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

A loaded field that includes world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and No. 2 Rory McIlroy promises an exciting weekend at a tournament often referred to as golf’s unofficial “fifth major.” Scheffler and McIlroy have combined to win four of the past six titles at The Players.

But with Scheffler struggling lately and McIlroy battling a sore back, world No. 4 Collin Morikawa entered the tournament as one of the favorites. A Golf Channel article placed him as the No. 2 favorite behind Si Woo Kim.

Unfortunately, Morikawa’s bid for a first Players title ended before it really got underway. The two-time major champion withdrew with a back injury of his own after completing just one hole.

The PGA Tour’s official X account shared Morikawa’s reaction. “Trust me, I would play if I could,” he said. “It’s just the worst thing in the world.
