Dual Gomes goals ensure Wolves beat Aston Villa and unwanted points record

As Wolves applied the seal to only their second Premier League victory of the season, Rodrigo Gomes doubling their lead over Aston Villa deep into second-half stoppage time, Rob Edwards hared down the touchline, yelling into the stands as his players started a celebratory pile-on a few yards behind him. It was a moment of catharsis for Edwards, who beat his chest and wellied an advertising hoarding, but for Unai Emery it was a different kind of cue.

As those in old gold savoured a win over near neighbours that takes them to 13 points, ending any fears that they may not eclipse Derby’s record-low tally of 11 in 2007-08, Emery marched straight down the tunnel before the post-match handshakes.

Wolves’s other Premier League win came against West Ham at the start of last month and no wonder the supporters savoured every second. “The two games we’ve won in the league this year, both managers have disappeared from the touchline,” Edwards said with a smile. “I think everyone expects just to turn up and win, which is understandable given how this season has gone.”

At the end of the season, how costly might this untimely slip prove for Villa? Judging by the way Emery fumed, this defeat will hurt for a while yet and, significantly, it could have major implications for their hopes of returning to the Champions League. They are on a poor run of form having taken only one win in their past six matches in all competitions and 12 points from their past nine league games. Emery called for perspective.

“Maybe you can say: ‘We are losing the chance to the win the Premier League,’” Emery said animatedly. “Some supporters maybe were dreaming. Now we are not with the possibility to fight for the Premier League, some can feel frustrated, even myself because I have my dreams. In September I was worried and the objective was to stay in the Premier League. One month ago I was dreaming about maybe winning the Premier League.”

'As good a basketball team as I've seen': How Dusty May led Michigan to Big Ten title in Year 2

Champaign, IL — Michigan basketball fans owe a huge thank you to Mrs. May, according to coach Dusty May.

In his second year leading the program, May and the No. 3-ranked Wolverines clinched the Big Ten Conference regular season title with a dominant 84-70 win over No. 11 Illinois on Friday, Feb. 27, at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois.

May has helped lead Michigan's transformation from an 8-24 campaign in the 2023-24 season to a potential No. 1 seed and the regular-season conference title with an impressive 27-2 record in 2025-26.

May, of course, wasn't with Michigan during the 2023-24 season: He was coaching Florida Atlantic to the Final Four as a major Cinderella. The run with the Owls had every program with an opening trying to court May. However, the choice of Michigan came down to a family decision.

"Anna, my wife, is a major, major influence and probably more of an influence on my decision-making than I," May said of his decision to pick Michigan over other programs with interest. "I'm a pretty simple man. Give me a ball, a gym and some dudes that want to work, and I am happy with Michigan."

Five key takeaways from the Gorton and Denton byelection

The Green party has pulled off a landmark victory in the Gorton and Denton byelection, marking a significant blow to Labour and the leadership of Keir Starmer.

Hannah Spencer, a local plumber and Green party councillor, was elected as the party’s first MP in northern England after overturning Labour’s 13,000-vote majority, while Reform UK finished second and Labour came third in the tightly contested race.

What are the key takeaways as the dust settles on the streets of Greater Manchester?

1. The Green surge continues

The Green party didn’t just sneak a win in Gorton and Denton, it won convincingly, taking almost 41% of the vote and securing a comfortable 4,400 majority. The party’s first victory in a Westminster byelection saw it increase its vote share by 27.5%, which is five times larger than the party has achieved in any byelection since 2010.

Reform was a fairly distant second place, picking up 10,578 votes, while Labour was left languishing in third, with 9,364 votes.

The result comes against a backdrop of growing support for the Greens, which have had a surge in membership since Zack Polanski took over as the party’s leader in September last year, rising from about 70,000 to more than 180,000. Sources in the party said they expected that to hit 200,000 soon.

According to Politico’s poll of polls, the Greens are polling at 16% nationally, two points behind the Conservatives and Labour, who are both on 18%, and a full 10 points behind Reform, who are on 26%. But given that in September the Greens were on 10%, 21 percentage points behind Reform, supporters will point to significant progress having been made.

The Greens’ choice of candidate was also key – and illuminating. Hannah Spencer, a plumber who has lived in Greater Manchester all her life, was a disarming force. She demonstrated an ability to connect with ordinary voters.

Her victory speech focused on wealth distribution, giving working-class people a voice. “Life has changed,” she said. “Instead of working for a nice life, we’re working to line the pockets of billionaires. We are being bled dry.”

2. Has Reform’s momentum stalled?

Reform has contested four byelections this parliament – two to Westminster, one to the Senedd and one to Holyrood. Nigel Farage’s party has only won one of them, a narrow victory in Runcorn, secured after its former Labour MP was convicted for assaulting one of his own constituents

Matt Goodwin was not seen as a good choice of candidate for Gorton and Denton, not least because of his extreme views. Despite making a lot of Manchester being the “city that made him”, his style and narrative contrasted sharply with Spencer’s.

But coming second in Gorton and Denton was, by some commentators’ estimation, a good result for Reform UK. The swing it experienced in Gorton and Denton approximately reflects the swing it is experiencing everywhere else in the UK, whereas the Greens significantly outperformed their national polling.

Reform led the field in the predominantly white, working-class Denton half of the constituency, but its virulent anti-immigration message supressed support among the 44% of voters in the Gorton and Denton population who identify as coming from a minority ethnic background.

Goodwin said he thought he had “embarrassed Labour” in one of its strongest seats. “I think if we can do this here, we can do this pretty much anywhere,” he said. According to pollsters More in Common, “if Reform made this progress uniformly across the country in a general election, and all else remained equal, they would end up with 229 seats”.

3. Labour is in trouble

Labour won Gorton and Denton with more than 50% of the vote in the 2024 general election. Its distant third place in this vote will reignite questions about Keir Starmer’s leadership and renew the criticism from those on the left of the party that he has not done enough to impress its progressive base – particularly coming on the back of a similar result last year in the Senedd seat of Caerphilly.

The result also points to Labour’s wider challenges in areas with high proportions of graduates, students and Muslims, said More In Common. John Curtice, a professor of politics at Strathclyde University, stressed that the result showed a collapse in support among two pillars of Labour’s traditional support: white, working-class voters and minority ethnic people. “The Green party’s historic success in the Gorton and Denton byelection means the future of British politics is now even more uncertain than it was already,”

4. The Tories’ electoral nadir deepens

The Conservatives did so badly in the election that they lost their £500 deposit. In a statement issued after the party won just 706 votes, the party leader, Kemi Badenoch, said there was “only one sensible candidate standing in Gorton and Denton, their candidate, Charlotte Cadden”. She got 1.9% of the votes cast, down 6% on the general election, marking only the second time the Conservatives have lost their deposit in a vote, by polling under 5%, since 1962.

The next lowest-polling candidate after the Conservatives was the Liberal Democrat, Jackie Pearcey, who got 653 vote and also lost her deposit. She was followed by The Official Monster Raving Looney Party candidate, Sir Oink-a-lot, who polled 159, beating Advance UK’s Nick Buckley by four votes.

5. The collapse of two-party politics

For the Conservative party, it was the worst byelection result in its history. For Labour, it was a third placing in its 50th safest seat, one it has held for nearly 100 years. And it was the sixth largest Labour majority to be overturned at a byelection since the second world war.

Activists for both for the Greens and Labour noted a shift among Muslim voters, with many mentioning Starmer’s position on Gaza as a key reason for moving away from the party.

With the Greens and Reform taking a combined 68% of the vote, and Labour and the Tories taking 27%, the “duopoly that has long dominated postwar British politics has never looked weaker”, according to Curtice.

Royce O'Neale hits last-second 3 to lift short-handed Suns over Lakers, 113-110

PHOENIX -- — Royce O'Neale made a 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds remaining, Grayson Allen scored 28 points and the short-handed Phoenix Suns beat the Los Angeles Lakers 113-110 on Thursday night after blowing a late 12-point lead.

Allen drove into the lane on the Suns' final possession before finding Collin Gillespie in the corner. Gillespie quickly swung the ball to an open O'Neale.

L.A.'s Austin Reaves missed an open corner 3 at the buzzer. Luka Doncic led the Lakers with 41 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Reaves' miss capped a thrilling final few minutes.

The Lakers bounced back from a 12-point deficit with 6:28 left to tie it at 108 on Reaves' 3-pointer with a minute to go. O'Neale responded with a layup after an offensive rebound to take a 110-108, but LeBron James had a tip-in on the ensuing possession to tie it at 110 with 22.7 seconds left.

Phoenix bounced back from a 13-point deficit early in the third quarter to tie it at 80 going into the fourth. Allen scored 16 points in the third, hitting four 3-pointers.

Gillespie made four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 21 points. The Suns shot 22 of 50 (44%) from 3-point range.

The Lakers opened the second half on a 11-0 run for a 60-49 advantage, capped by DeAndre Ayton's alley-oop dunk on a nice pass from Doncic.

The Suns improved to 2/3 since the All-Star break. Phoenix was playing without its top two scorers — All-Star guard Devin Booker (hip strain) and forward Dillon Brooks (fractured hand).

The Booker-Brooks duo is averaging roughly 45 points per game and the Suns are struggling to find scoring options without them. It was the first time the team topped 100 points in regulation over the past five games.

Botched final play between Luka, LeBron dooms Lakers vs. Magic

LOS ANGELES -- The Lakers lost to the Orlando Magic 110-109 on Tuesday after a botched sidelines out-of-bounds play between LeBron James and Luka Doncic in the final seconds failed to produce a quality shot.

After Magic center Wendell Carter Jr. scored on a putback with 6.7 seconds remaining to put Orlando up one, L.A. called timeout. On the ensuing play, James passed the ball to an open Doncic, who caught it on the left wing beyond the 3-point line but opted not to shoot.

"I know I was open, but I just thought I was a little bit far," Doncic said. "Tried to take one dribble closer. And I probably shouldn't have picked up the ball and just tried to attack."

James caught the pass with 2.9 seconds left, turned away from Isaac and shot a 27-foot fadeaway 3-pointer that missed at the buzzer.

"I thought he had a good look, and it looked like he kind of just lost his balance," James said when asked for an explanation of what broke down. "Didn't have a rhythm with the ball, whatever the case may be. And it kind of allowed [Orlando's defense] to get back in front of him. And I was kind of off-balance when he gave it to me. I thought he had a great look. That's my POV."

Confirmed line-up: Murphy's moment in Qarabağ clash

Alex Murphy will make his full Newcastle United bow in the Magpies' UEFA Champions League meeting with Qarabağ (kick-off 8:00pm GMT).

Each of the Republic of Ireland under-21 international's six appearances so far have come from the bench - four of them coming this season.

His debut came as a late substitute against Chelsea in the Premier League in November 2023; the Galway-born 21-year-old has since made two further appearances from the bench in the league, two in the Carabao Cup and one in the FA Cup, and spent the second half of last season on loan with Bolton Wanderers.

But the defender is in from the start at St. James' Park for his first outing in the Champions League as Eddie Howe makes six changes to the side narrowly beaten at Manchester City at the weekend.

The Magpies are 6-1 up from last week's first leg, and Anthony Gordon - who scored four goals in Azerbaijan and celebrates his 25th birthday - is on the bench while Malick Thiaw, who also netted in Baku, is suspended.

But Alex Murphy's namesake, Jacob, makes his 251st appearance for Newcastle after scoring the final goal in last week's tie. He is 31 today. Kieran Trippier captains the side, with Aaron Ramsdale in goal.

The goalkeeper comes in for Nick Pope, with the two Murphys, Sven Botman, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes replacing Gordon, Thiaw, Lewis Hall, Joe Willock and Anthony Elanga in the first XI.

There are three keepers - Pope, John Ruddy and Aidan Harris - on the bench, while Sean Neave will look to get more action after making his debut late on in the first leg. Leo Shahar is on standby for his Magpies bow.

Sørloth hat trick, Cardoso stunner puts Atlético in UCL last 16

Alexander Sørloth scored a hat trick as Atlético Madrid secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 4-1 second-leg playoff win against Club Brugge.

With the tie evenly poised at 3-3 following an explosive first rubber in Belgium, Diego Simeone's side opened the scoring at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano through Sørloth after 23 minutes.

The Norway striker raced on to Jan Oblak's long kick downfield and after holding off Brandon Mechele, he managed to get a fierce left-footed shot away which squirmed underneath Simon Mignolet in the visitors' goal.

Mignolet should have done better, and Atleti would have been keen to build on their advantage.

However, Brugge were back in the contest just 13 minutes later when Joel Ordóñez headed home from a corner to level the playoff at four goals apiece.

But the Spanish team were back ahead inside three minutes of the second half after United States midfielder Johnny Cardoso picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and lashed home a brilliant half-volley.

Brugge went in search of an equaliser, but Sørloth netted his second with 14 minutes to go when he scored from close range following a neat interchange between substitutes Ademola Lookman and Antoine Griezmann.

The impressive Sørloth then completed his treble in the 87th minute with his 15th goal of the season as Atleti finalised a 7-4 aggregate triumph. They will next play Liverpool or Tottenham for a place in the quarter-finals.

Cowboys back in the race Read more at: https://americanpress.com/2026/02/23/cowboys-back-in-the-race-2/

On a night when McNeese said goodbye to its seniors, the Cowboys were welcomed back into the Southland Conference title race. The Cowboys kept their hopes of a third straight regular-season championship alive with a gritty 75-68 victory over Texas Rio-Grande Valley Monday night in Townsley Law Arena. McNeese’s win, coupled with Stephen F. Austin’s 77-73 loss to New Orleans, moves the Cowboys to within a game of the Lumberjacks with two remained.

“I’m not too concerned about that,” said senior DJ Richards, who has been on the past two title clubs. “No one came here to win the regular season. We want to win it, but the main goal is to win the Southland tournament and get to the NCAA.” The Cowboys are 24-5, 17-3 after claiming their 27th straight home win overall and 33rd in a row against the Southland. McNeese is 47-1 on Joe Dumars Court the last three years. “For us to stay undefeated for the year at home, that’s special,” said McNeese head coach Bill Armstrong.

BAFTA Apologizes “Unreservedly” to Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo After Tourette’s Outburst: “We Want to Acknowledge the Harm This Has Caused”

BAFTA has released a full apology after a man with Tourette’s shouted a racial slur at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo while they presented the award for best visual effects on Sunday night.

“Our guests heard very offensive language that carries incomparable trauma and pain for so many,” the statement began. “We want to acknowledge the harm this has caused, address what happened and apologise to all.”

Headlines from Britain’s biggest night for film have focused on the painful moment that a Tourette’s campaigner, John Davidson, was heard shouting the N-word at Sinners twosome Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo as they took to the stage to present the BAFTA for best visual effects. The BBC has apologized for the “strong and offensive language” and for not cutting the racial slur from its final broadcast, which aired on a two-hour delay.

Following a swathe of online backlash over Davidson’s outbursts and negative press attention surrounding the neurological condition, U.K. charity Tourette’s Action issued a statement on Instagram in defence of the activist, maintaining that his statements are “not a reflection of a person’s beliefs, intentions, or character.” They wrote: “The backlash from certain parts of the media has been extremely saddening, particularly given how hard John works to raise awareness and understanding.”

And after hours of silence through Monday, BAFTA asked THR to run their statement on the matter in full. See below.

At the BAFTA Film Awards last night, our guests heard very offensive language that carries incomparable trauma and pain for so many. We want to acknowledge the harm this has caused, address what happened and apologise to all.

Ryan off that good juice': Ryan Garcia's lopsided title win over Mario Barrios sets off boxing world

Ryan Garcia can finally call himself a world champion. Already one of the most popular names in boxing, the 28-year-old Garcia secured his position among the welterweight division's best Saturday with a dominant, one-sided decision win over Mario Barrios to claim the WBC world title in Las Vegas.

Garcia knocked down Barrios in the opening round with a blistering punch to set the tone, then cruised to an easy win over one of the sport's most-maligned titleholders. Garcia ultimately out-landed Barrios 185-106 in total punches and 103-43 in power punches en route to earning his first official win since 2023. Afterward, Garcia called out WBO super lightweight champion and pound-for-pound staple Shakur Stevenson, who swiftly accepted the challenge on Saturday's DAZN pay-per-view broadcast.

Considering his infamy within the sport and recent history — "King Ry" served a one-year suspension after his 2024 win over Devin Haney was overturned into a no-contest due to a positive drug test for ostarine, then lost his lackluster return bout against Roland "Rolly" Romero this past May — it's no surprise that Garcia's crowning performance drew plenty of attention from his fellow fighters.

Airlines waive change fees ahead of another monster winter storm

U.S. airlines waived cancellation and change fees for flights from Virginia to Maine ahead of another massive winter storm that’s set to once again put carriers to the test at the tail-end of winter break.

Delta Air Lines

, American Airlines

, JetBlue Airways

, United Airlines

and Spirit Airlines waived fees and fare differences for passengers if they can travel as late as Feb. 26. Southwest Airlines

said customers are eligible for a change without paying a difference in fare if they can rebook to fly or fly standby within two weeks.

The storm could bring between 13 and 18 inches of snow to parts of southern Connecticut and southeast New York, as well as winds of up to 55 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. The blizzard warning is set to begin at 6 a.m. ET Sunday.

As of 11:30 a.m. ET Saturday, cancellations were minimal around the U.S. for Sunday’s schedule ahead of the storm, whose impacts are forecast to last through much of Monday.

Winter Storm Fern in January, followed by bitter cold, caused mass travel disruptions across a large swath of the U.S.

American Airlines had struggled to recover, drawing harsh criticism from flight crews, some of whom were stranded and had to sleep at airports, heightening tension between frontline employees and the company’s CEO, Robert Isom.

The storm cost American between $150 million and $200 million in revenue, the carrier said last month on an earnings call.

Lakers hold on to beat Clippers

The Lakers came out on top against the Clippers on Friday night.

The game began with Brook Lopez going on a personal 5-0 run for the Clippers. Austin Reaves scored the first five points for the Lakers. The offense started to pick up for the Lakers, who were now shooting 80% from the field. LeBron James added a quick seven points.

At the 6:18 mark, the purple and gold were up by three.

Luka Dončić started to heat up, draining two 3-pointers for six points. Lopez led the Clippers with nine points. After a Laker timeout, Luke Kennard knocked down a 3-pointer. The triples continued to fly as Luka drained two more. The Lakers had taken complete control of the game.

At the end of the first, the purple and gold were up by 12.

The Lakers start their first game out of the break absolutely unconscious from 3, going 8 for 9 in the 1st Q after Dončić drilled his 3rd and 4th.

The home team leads 41-29 on 84.2% FG's overall, led by 17 points from Luka.

‘I love this group’; Bishop Kearney grads react after winning gold in overtime hockey victory

It’s the third time in history that the U.S. women have become Olympic champions in hockey, each time over arch-rival Canada. Regulation ended 1-1, but Team USA’s Megan Keller had the final say with a goal to steal the win.

Among the team members is Webster native Haley Winn, a defender. In addition, Caroline Harvey (defender) of New Hampshire, Laila Edwards (forward) of Ohio, Kirsten Simms (forward) of Michigan, and Ava McNaughton (goalie) of Pennsylvania all graduated from Bishop Kearney. Harvey spoke about her emotions after the game.

“Speechless, unreal. I mean, not a lot of words, but a lot of emotion and excitement and proud is an understatement for our group,” Harvey said.

Edwards said this was a full-circle moment. “It was unbelievable. This is the best group I’ve ever been part of, top talent on the ice, off the ice. I love this group to death,” she said.

Bishop Kearney has been a longtime powerhouse in girls’ hockey, attracting talent from across the world. Two members of the German Olympic team (Nina Christof and Jule Schiefer) and Czechia goalie Michaela Hesová also graduated from the school. Many hockey players at the school moved thousands of miles away from their homes to pursue their dreams and train with the best, said Cari Coen, director of girls hockey at Bishop Kearney. We spoke with Coen at a watch party on Thursday to cheer on Team USA.

When you watched the gold medal game, you may have seen three people dressed in matching Team USA-themed outfits and cheering in unison. Those are Winn’s brothers, who have turned into a viral sensation. News10NBC spoke with them about their support for their sister, how they got into hockey, and where they get their outfits.

Alysa Liu's Olympic gold medal win inspiring young skaters at Oakland ice rink where she trained

News of Alysa Liu's gold medal in the women's single skating event, the first American woman to win gold since 2002, is the talk of the town in Oakland.

Liu was raised in Richmond and trained at Oakland Ice on her way to the Olympics. While she dazzled on the ice in gold, many were cheering her on at her old rink.

Giada and Keanu Lee drive all the way from eastern Contra Costa County to get a few hours of practice at Oakland Ice. Giada started when she was 7 years old.

"When I was younger, I watched the Olympics and stuff with my mom, and I told her, 'I want to go up and skate there, too,'" Giada Lee said.

She even inspired her brother to take up the sport. Both have been watching Liu's career take off. Keanu even had a minor collision with the Olympic star when they were all training together at Oakland Ice.

"I accidentally bumped into her once, and I was really nervous," said Keanu Lee. "Sorry and stuff like that. She was, like, 'That's okay.' Really friendly."

Giada has different memories of Liu, those that motivate her to love the sport.

"I really like how she's always smiling when she practices," she said. "She really gives me happiness when she skates."

The impact of Liu's success can be seen as beginners take the ice.

"I thought it was crazy and she's so good," said 10-year-old skater Chloe, who added that she's not as good as Liu yet but has a passion for skating.

"I love it because I'm gliding on the ice and I can dance around," she said.

Canada rallies past Finland, advances to gold medal game at 2026 Winter Olympics: Live updates and reaction

After Canada came back from 2-0 down, Nathan MacKinnon scored the game-winning goal with 35.2 seconds left

Josh Morrissey was ruled out again for Team Canada and it can’t be understated what a loss that’s been for the team in this tournament. He’s their second-best defenseman after Cale Makar. His loss has hampered what was supposed to be Canada’s shutdown pair again with Colton Parayko, as it was at the 4 Nations Face-Off last year. Morrissey went the full hour at practice on Tuesday on the eve of the quarterfinals and it sure appeared as though he was on the mend. But he missed that game, then skipped Thursday’s optional practice before once again being scratched for Friday’s semifinal. Not ideal.

Team Canada has rotated a few defensemen with Parayko since his absence. It was Thomas Harley’s turn Friday, which really makes the most sense as Harley and Morrissey share a similar skill set. That left Travis Sanheim and Drew Doughty as the third pairing for Friday’s game. Sanheim pinched in a couple of times in the opening period to create some looks for Canada.

Down 2-1 and looking for offense, Team Canada made a tangible adjustment to open the third period. With Finland collapsing down low so much while protecting the net, the Canadians started using their point men more, looking for point shots to get tips or rebounds. It finally led to Shea Theodore’s blast from the point getting through and beating Saros top corner to tie the game 2-2.

The Finns paid the price for their rope-a-dope approach after going up 2-0 in the second period. They sat back way too much, trying to protect a lead with too much time left in the game. The shots were 14-3 Canada in the second period alone.

Olympics news, live updates: USA vs. Slovakia in men's semis; curling falls to Switzerland

The 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics are in full swing, and Friday will be another massive day in Italy:

Beating Switzerland in consecutive matches proved too difficult for Team USA on Friday. A day after defeating Switzerland to advance to the semifinals, Team USA lost 7-4 to the Swiss team Friday.

Switzerland played a strong defensive game, limiting Team USA to just one point in the ends in which they scored. Switzerland also controlled the hammer, forcing multiple scoreless ends to keep the final stone.

While the U.S. tried to make it tough in the 10th end, Switzerland executed on its hammer throw, picking up two points to seal the victory.

With the loss, Team USA will play for the bronze medal Saturday.

Both the United States and Canada are one win away from the matchup ice hockey fans have been anticipating since the Winter Olympics began. Canada plays Finland in the first semifinal at 10:40 a.m. ET and the U.S. takes the ice versus Slovakia in the late game.

Selena Gomez Reacts to U.S. Figure Skater Alysa Liu Wearing Rare Beauty Lip Gloss at the 2026 Olympics

The founder caught wind of a clip of U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu reaching for a Rare Beauty lip product before accepting her gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics and took to Instagram to share a relatable response.

In the video that's been circulating the internet, Liu is seen walking to the podium before pausing and asking, "Where's my lipstick?" She then grabs what one TikToker identified as the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Lip Oil in Delight, a rose brown shade.

On her Instagram Stories, Gomez, 33, reacted to the moment, writing, "Congratulations @alysaxliu. (She's just like me fr)."

The 20-year-old figure skater won the gold medal after her free skate performance in Milan, Italy, on Thursday, Feb. 19, breaking a 24-year drought for Team USA.

Her total score was 226.79, enough to push her ahead of Japan's Kaori Sakamoto, who finished with a silver medal and a score of 224.90. Liu's win marked the first time since Sarah Hughes in 2002 that Team USA took home the gold in women's figure skating.

2026 Olympic figure skating women's free skate live updates: Amber Glenn to skate soon; Alysa Liu still to come in Milan's grand figure skating finale

Julia Sauter is making her Olympic debut here in Milan Cortina after 10 national titles and 13 years competing for Romania. She is originally from Germany and finally was awarded citizenship last fall. She has funded her training throughout, working as a school-aid and waitress and a coach to cover training expenses.

The 28-year-old was 11th at the European Championships.

Her short program at the Milan Cortina Games was one of her best and the judges agreed, awarding her a personal best score. She headed into the short program in 16th place.

Today, she skated her free skate to a medley by The Cinematic Orchestra with absolute joy, smiling broadly after she realized her jumping passes were nearly flawless. She received another personal best earning 127.80 points — which had her shouting with happiness — and her total score was 190.93 points.

Olga Mikutina, Austria’s five-time national champion trains in New Jersey and attends Montclair State University. Thanks to a 17th-place finish at the Olympic qualifying 2025 World Championships, she qualified for Milan Cortina with ease, and she placed 13th at the European Championships earlier this year.

She was excellent today, skating to an emotional cover of “Nothing Else Matters,” with a few under-rotation calls on jumps, giving an overall powerful performance. She earned a season's best of 123.87 points and a total Olympic debut score of 185.59 points.

Where to Watch 2026 Winter Olympics Women Single Free Skating For Free: Start Time, Livestream

An exciting short program set the scene for an even more exciting women’s free skate as the final figure skating medals of the 2026 Olympics will be awarded this afternoon at the conclusion of the women’s singles event.

All three of Team USA’s Blade Angels will be back in action today and there’s a chance we may even see one (or more!) of them on the podium.

Alysa Liu had the strongest showing in the free skate, ending in third place (and in prime position to contend for a medal) behind 2022 bronze medalist Kaori Sakamoto and teenage phenom Ami Nakai, both of Japan.

After skating to her Sophia Loren medley, Isabeau Levito is in eighth, while Amber Glenn — skating to Madonna — landed in 13th after failing to perform a triple loop, losing all of the points she could have gained from that required element.

As the streaming home of the Olympics, you can watch today’s free skate live on Peacock, but you can also take advantage of a  free trial to stream the event without paying a cent. Keep reading for everything you need to know about the women’s free skate.

Team news: Gyokeres one of seven changes at Wolves

Mikel Arteta has made seven changes to his side for tonight’s game at Wolves, with Viktor Gyokeres joining Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in attack.

Having made a number of switches for our FA Cup fourth round win against Wigan Athletic on Sunday, the boss has shuffled his pack once again as we return to league action, hoping to go seven points clear at the top.

Having been rested on the weekend, David Raya and Jurrien Timber replace Kepa Arrizabalaga and Ben White, while Gabriel and Piero Hincapie also return to our backline.

Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are back in midfield, while Gyokeres is named up front. That means only William Saliba, Saka, Madueke and Martinelli are named in the side for the second time in succession.

In terms of league games, three switches have been made since the 1-1 draw at Brentford, when Ebere Eze, Cristhian Mosquera and Leandro Trossard started. All three are the bench again tonight, as is Riccardo Calafiori who has recovered from the pre-match injury he sustained against Wigan.

Kristi Yamaguchi says it's "imperative" for figure skaters to have a clean short program

Women's figure skating got underway Tuesday at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games, and while there had been high hopes for Team USA, early missteps and disappointing scores have placed medal hopes mostly on the skates of Alysa Liu.

Before the event got going, former world champion and Olympic gold medal winner Kristi Yamaguchi was optimistic about the chances of a medal for an American woman — one hasn't won an individual Olympic skating medal in two decades. She also told CBS News it's "imperative" to have a clean short program.

Liu, Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito — the trio of skaters collectively known as the "Blade Angels" — stepped onto Olympic ice for the individual short program on Tuesday.

But unfortunately for Glenn, she couldn't complete her triple loop — a costly mistake that dropped her into 13th place in the standings after the short program. Liu was in third place while Levito was in eighth headed into the free skate on Thursday.

"It's imperative to have a clean short," Yamaguchi said before the event started. "Missing one element is so detrimental, and you want to set yourself up right for a chance at a medal, at the gold."

She also said it's important to come back with a strong free program, even after a catastrophe in the short.

"You might not get the medal you want, but it's just proving that, you know, you belong there and you were ready," she said.

Medaling will be a tall order for Glenn and Levito, but it's not completely out of the question. Glenn sits 9.2 points off of third place, while Levito is 5.75 points behind the bronze medal position. Making up that much distance would mean other competitors would need to make mistakes of their own in the free skate, but there have plenty of those in these Winter Games

Olympic men’s hockey quarterfinals: Breaking down the matchups for Canada, USA and more

Sweden’s road to gold starts in earnest Wednesday night against the United States, a gold-medal-level matchup that’s happening in the quarterfinals thanks to Slovakia’s surprising Group B victory. After three round-robin games and Tuesday’s perfunctory 5-1 rout of Latvia, the real do-or-die games start now. And while Canada and the United States — the other two gold-medal favorites — cruised into the quarters with three easy wins and a bye, Team Sweden has scuffled and shuffled its way here.

And they might be better off for it.

“You can cruise through it and then all of a sudden you’re tested in a way you weren’t prepared for,” Sweden coach Sam Hallam said. “It gives you a better feeling now that we’ve had these small things go wrong every game and had to look at things, adjust small things.”

It’s something Landeskog is getting a taste of with the Colorado Avalanche this season. After one of the best starts in NHL history — 31-2-7 — the Avs have lost nine of their last 15 games. Hardly a crisis, but potentially beneficial in the long run.

“That’s the same as over there, same as in the NHL,” Landeskog said. “You’re going to run into adversity at some point, and how you manage that is how you’re going to define yourself as a group, and how you handle that is up to us in the locker room. We’ve stumbled in the tournament so far. We’ve also shown some really good things, so for us, it’s just a matter of continuing to build, understanding that hopefully we’ve got another week to go here and understanding that we need to be playing our best hockey at the most important time, which is right now.”

Mitch Marner caps Canada comeback in Olympic OT win vs. Czechia

MILAN -- Nick Suzuki tied it on a deflection with 3:27 left, Mitch Marner scored in overtime and Canada avoided what would have been a stunning quarterfinal exit at the Olympics by rallying to beat Czechia 4-3 on Wednesday.

Canada fell behind with 7:42 remaining when Ondrej Palat scored on an odd-man rush off a pass from Martin Necas. The goal sent the Czech bench and fans into a wild celebration, but it was short-lived.

Suzuki just about did it all on the tying goal, sending the puck out to the point to Devon Toews and then redirecting the defenseman's shot past Lukas Dostal. Jordan Binnington denied David Pastrnak on a breakaway with 70 seconds left to send the game past regulation.

Then Marner's backhanded goal 1:22 into OT put Canada into the semifinals Friday, where it could face Finland, Switzerland or Sweden. The U.S. plays Sweden in the fourth and final quarterfinal on Wednesday night. Finland and Switzerland were ongoing when Czechia-Canada ended.

Canada even staying in the tournament has a major concern after losing Sidney Crosby to injury five minutes into the second period. Crosby's right leg appeared to buckle bracing for contact from rugged Czechia defenseman Radko Gudas, and he left the ice after getting crunched seconds later against the boards by Gudas and Necas.

Football Vinicius Junior alleged he was racially abused by Gianluca Prestianni during Real Madrid's win over Benfica on Tuesday; UEFA is investigating and Prestianni -

The Real Madrid winger scored the goal in his side's 1-0 win, after which he celebrated in front of the Benfica fans before he was allegedly abused by Prestianni.

Prestianni pulled his shirt over his mouth while confronting Vinicius but denies the allegation of racism.

Vinicius Junior racism claim - the key points...

Champions League game halted after after Vinicius allegedly racially abused by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni.

Trent Alexander-Arnold called the incident “a disgrace to football”, while Kylian Mbappe said after the game that he and other Benfica players heard what Prestianni said to Vinicius.

Benfica boss Jose Mourinho has been criticised for suggesting Vinicius had provoked the abuse with his celebration. Kick It Out have since released a statement accusing the Portuguese boss of 'gaslighting'.

Vinicius responded to alleged abuse by saying “racists are cowards” in a statement.

Prestianni released his own statement saying he had not directed racist insults at Vinicius, who he said had “regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard”.

Benfica posted footage of the incident on X, also dismissing the allegations.

UEFA has confirmed that it is investigating allegations of discriminatory behaviour.

Benfica have reiterated their support to Prestianni and have claimed a 'defamation campaign' against him

Ex-HSBC banker dodged £5,900 in London train fares by using 'doughnutting' fraud

Joseph Molloy, a former HSBC executive, exploited the scam over 740 times in 11 months, saving a total of £5,911 on Southeastern train fares, Inner London Crown Court heard

A “distinguished” London banker has been banned from using railway services after being caught fare dodging using a scam known as “doughnutting”.

Joseph Molloy, a former HSBC executive, purchased tickets between stations at the beginning and end of his journey, but did not pay for those in between.

This technique, which saved him thousands on train fares, allowed him to use ticket barriers whilst paying less than other customers, The Times reported.

Molloy exploited the scam over 740 times in 11 months, saving a total of £5,911 on Southeastern train fares, Inner London Crown Court heard.

The banking executive travelled from his £2 million home in Orpington, south London, to London Bridge station, and then on to his office in Canary Wharf.

The 53-year-old pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation and appeared at court on Tuesday for sentencing

go one, two, four in the standings, with Alysa Liu of the USA in third.

Chiba looks to be having a lot more fun out there than most, skating to Donna Summer rather than something super serious and operatic and vast like so many skaters, and has a cheerful expression on her face the whole time. She’s tiny, and flings herself around the ice, going for a double axel and a triple lutz, no deductions, and banking a 74. There’s a slight judge query on one of the elements.

So it’s an exceptional round for the Japanese team, but the story of it is Nakai Ami, the most junior member, who produced the only flawless performance, and did so with such style. Could she possibly back that up in the free skate? Is that wishful thinking?

Schizas, Safonova, Variakojyte, Feigin, and Spours are the five who’ll miss out on progressing to the free skate, which will be on Thursday.

Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq end higher in volatile trading day as Apple jumps

US stocks edged higher Tuesday in volatile trading as Wall Street continued assessing the AI jitters that have hammered markets in recent weeks.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) flipped into the green to end 0.1% higher, recovering from steep losses early in the session. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) rose just above the flatline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was little changed.

Apple (AAPL) shares gained more than 3% over optimism that the iPhone maker is ramping up development of wearable devices with AI capabilities.

After a break for Presidents Day, AI concerns continued to simmer. Investors are on the lookout for the next potential victim after fresh worries about AI's ability to upend industries hit stocks in sectors from wealth management to transportation to logistics. The Dow and S&P 500 have fallen in four of the past five weeks amid that pressure.

This week, earnings season enters its final stretch. The week's highlight is Walmart's (WMT) quarterly report on Thursday, the first since the retail giant joined the trillion-dollar market cap club.

Elsewhere in corporates, Paramount Skydance (PSKY) stock rose over 5% on Tuesday following the news that Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has given the studio one week to come back with a better offer. Warner Bros. rejected the latest bid from the

Apparent racist abuse of Vinícius Júnior overshadows Real Madrid’s win in Benfica

Vinícius Júnior and his teammates appeared ready to walk off and the game was put on hold for 10 minutes after the Brazilian told the referee that he had been subject to racist abuse after scoring the goal that gives Real Madrid a 1-0 first-leg lead in their Champions League playoff against Benfica. Vinícius had celebrated the strike dancing in the corner of the Estádio da Luz and in the confrontations that followed, Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni said something to him while covering his mouth. Vinícius immediately ran to the referee, François Letexier, who stopped the match and crossed his arms to signal that he was doing so because of an accusation of racist abuse.

Both managers came on to the pitch and Vinícius spoke to José Mourinho to explain what had happened. Conversations and confrontations continued as Vinícius sat alone on the bench, but eventually they restarted with the Brazilian on the pitch. The noise that accompanied Benfica’s attempts to get back into it, and a red card for Mourinho as he protested a late foul on the edge of the Madrid area, were unable to eclipse the feeling that there was something empty, something sadder, about the occasion now, like this match no longer mattered. Its lasting legacy will not be about the football.

It had been different to the last time they had met, just 20 days ago. Mourinho had said that he began his analysis by watching back the last meeting, but soon turned off and threw his early prep in the bin. This Madrid is not that Madrid, he said, and that was quickly clear. Álvaro Arbeloa has settled on a structure that gives a more muscular presence in the middle, offering a solidity that simply wasn’t there three weeks ago. Benfica started brightly again, the noise rising as Rafa Silva was almost slipped in after just three minutes and there was a willingness to run through the middle from deep, particularly from Leandro Barreiro, but they would not find it so easy to tear into Madrid this

Return of Topshop hailed as major boost to city

The return of fashion brand Topshop to Essex could be a major boost to High Street shopping, a retail expert said.

A pop-up version of the retailer opened inside John Lewis in Chelmsford on Tuesday.

Topshop was a household name until it closed in 2021, but 32 outlets are due to become available again across the UK in February.

Sara Tupper, chief executive of city business group Chelmsford For You, said: "It brings back a popular fashion name to physical retail and attracts new and younger shoppers."

The Topshop chain disappeared following the collapse of Sir Philip Green's retail empire, Arcadia Group.

Perhaps its most iconic venue was the three-storey shop at 214 Oxford Street, which had its own nail bar, food stalls and DJs.

The retailer continued to sell online via Asos after its in-person shops collapsed, before announcing its return in September.

Tupper said: "Not only can this increase footfall from locals and visitors, but most importantly it signals confidence in bricks-and-mortar shopping, making the city more vibrant and economically resilient."

Police identify suspect in Rhode Island ice rink shooting

Police have identified the suspect in a shooting at a high school ice hockey game in Rhode Island that killed two people and injured three others.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said Robert Dorgan, who also used the name Roberta and the surname Esposito, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the Dennis M Lynch Arena on Sunday.

"It appears that this was a targeted event, that it may be a family dispute," Goncalves said. She did not provide details about the identity of the victims.

Video of the incident showed shots were fired while players were on the rink, sparking panic as the teams scrambled to leave the arena.

Goncalves said a bystander "stepped in and interjected" and "that's probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event".

After the incident, hockey players and their families described their fear after gunfire broke out.

Melissa Dunn, whose son played for one of the hockey teams, said she saw paramedics performing CPR in the stands of the arena after she ran back inside to find her son.

"You don't know what's going on at first," Dunn said. "You just hear the loud noises. And we're used to the kids banging on the board with their skates, so we thought it was that at first."

She said she screamed for her son to duck and avoid gunfire.

"We ran out of the rink… your first thought is 'where's my kid?'" she said. "I tried to get back in the rink, and I actually got back in there to find out where he was, and I saw them doing CPR in the stands and it was just really disturbing."
